We now want to locate Chops or Big Al (Alan Smith) BNSW. Chops has a reputation for going missing!! Does anyone know of Big AL's whereabouts?
50 Year Reunion
On the 30th November 2023 we had a 50 year Reunion at the BNZ Retired Officers' Auckland Christmas Lunch. John Kenny organised a table of 6 BNZ Lautoka staff who had worked together in the 1970 - 1973 period. They were: Murray & Jenny Gyde (1969 - 1972), Leo Abbott (1970 - 1973), John Kenny (Sundance) (1970 - 1973), Tom Rowe (1971 - 1974), Lynden Penketh (LBJ) (1972 -1974).
It was wonderful catching up with them again as we had not seen Murray & Jenny or Tom Rowe since leaving Lautoka in 1973. We had aged a bit but have fond memories of those life changing times in the then very colonial Fiji.
It was also great to meet and put faces to many of the correspondents to this website who also attended and to listen to their Fiji stories. I have now met face to face with the following:
Paul Hickford, Russell Hormann, Bob Manson, Brian Holt and his wife, Simoa, Steve Wiltshire, Mike Rapson, Denis Merrigan and Kevin Kite.
As the afternoon moved on a few stories started to emerge. Mike Rapson was based in Labasa and I reminded him of one long weekend where I flew up to visit the boys. Mike introduce us to an Australian couple who managed the Timber Mill and we got up to some real mischief. Another story emerged from an Ancestry DNA result. This young fellow has recently discovered he has a Granddaughter on the otherside of the world. Boys would be boys!! and I understand that he is not alone there?
At our age in our late 70's and 80ish making an effort to catch up with old friends is something to put on your "Bucket List". It is very rewarding indeed as I have found out.
Just Do it.
May 2021. John Coverdale BNSW from 1960's has added 10 new members from the Overseas Dept Suva. Paul Hickford has added another 52 names as at December 2019. October 2019 we added another 87 names thanks to Paul Hickford, Russell Hormann and Tim Dwyer all BNZ. This was in addition to 90 new members added in January 2019 many of them from the 1960's. This would age them into their 80's and many may have passed on. Please accept our apology if they have deceased and let us know accordingly.
We have been advised of the following members passing:
George Reynolds (BNZ) in Cambridge, Peter Harnett (BNZ) in Tauranga and Nat Fidler (BNZ) on 22nd September 2022, Joan Pratt (Bowater) 2020 and Ken Parker 2022.
We now have 54 member profiles telling stories of their Fiji days and what they have been up to since leaving.
